Ryan Farm
Centenary Thurles Co-op

Maryland Farm at Lisheen outside Thurles is home to the Ryans and their family farm which dates back five generations to 1860. Tom, Mary and their son Micheal have forged a three-way partnership, combining tradition and innovation with a deep-seated respect for the environment.

With a closed herd, the Ryans milk 150 cows, achieving an impressive average of 523kg solids per cow in 2024. During the year, the average TBC was just 9, while the SCC was 71. These numbers reflect disciplined routines and attention to detail, and a system that prioritises animal health and welfare. The Ryan Farm supplies Centenary Co-op.
Breeding is a big focus on this farm; Mary once worked with Dovea and brings her expertise to bear. They use TB-resistant bulls and genomic testing and they are steadily raising the EBI, achieving health, fertility and performance.

Maryland Farm is rich with wildlife, showing an abundance of species can co-exist. Sustainability measures include protecting waterways with fencing, planting red clover, LESS slurry application, water recycling and solar panels for renewable energy. The farm’s carbon footprint is just 0.86kg.
